Solo or Small Groups

The opportunity to swim across one of the countries most beautiful open water venues.

We are open to all abilities, with a range of distance options.

Open Water Swimming in the heart of Rutland

It's not a good year for big events! Covid-19 is not spoiling all our fun.

SwimRutland Solo allows swimmers to complete the challenge whilst safely socially distancing.
The plan has changed but the challenge remains the same.
We will operate throughout the summer as long as its safe to do so. Subject to water quality and weather conditions.

August - September

Whitwell - Normanton Rutland Water

2km, 4km or 8km

Swimmers will be escorted across the course by our experienced team.
We will be supported at all times by the team at Rutland Water sports.
We cover safety with Kayaks, powerboats and stand up paddle boards

(weather conditions will dictate the most appropriate).

Maximum group size is five swimmers for 2km & 4km, three swimmers for 8km.

If you are not from the same household/bubble you must socially distance.
2km Swimmers must arrange their own transport from the finish line as you don't end your swim where you started.

4km and 8km swims start and finish in the same location.

Please note,

Swim floats must be used, SwimRutland provide floats but you're welcome to use your own if you have one.

Minimum age restrictions apply. Swimmers must be the following age on the day of the swim.

2km 16yrs / 4km 16yrs / 8km 18yrs

SwimRutland solo is available 7 days a week from July - September. Times depend on lake activity but will likely start early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak boat traffic. Please email to discuss availability.

Want to join a group?

We have a limited number of informal 4km and 2km group swims you may join if you prefer a group environment and/or price and don't have anyone to swim the course with you. You must be able to swim within the time limits set if swimming with a group.
Provisional dates (subject to weather and water quality)

(more dates coming soon)

If you join a group swim you will have to swim together. You may have to wait at regular intervals for slower swimmers to catch up (there are worse places to wait around and enjoy the scenery so its not a major hardship) You must be comfortable swimming at whatever pace is set by the group.

SwimRutland provide an escort across the lake. We will lead swimmers across the course. Our team are experienced and qualified safety boat operators. Group numbers are restricted so that social distancing can be covered. If swimmers are from the same household it's obviously not an issue. But people from a variety of households can swim together as long as they keep a safe distance apart.

Water quality will be tested regularly. Sessions will only go ahead if water quality standards are reached.

With an exposed course weather will always dictate the safety of the swim. We will discuss the suitability of the conditions with each individual and re schedule if a session needs to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Swimmers must stay together and match the pace of the slowest in the group.

Anyone displaying Covid-19 symptoms or living with someone displaying symptoms is required by law to self isolate. Please do not risk the health of our team by attending if you fall into that category. There will be plenty of opportunity to swim.

Entry Fees: Starting from £38 per swimmer.

A group of 5 swimming 2km will cost £38 a head - total £190.00 (The Standard SwimRutland price).

2km from £38    |     Solo 2km £90 1:1 - Additional Swimmers £25     (Max 5 Swimmers)         1 hour

4km from £44    |     Solo 4km £120 1:1 - Additional Swimmers £25    (Max 5 Swimmers)        2 hours

8km from £90    |     Solo 8km £220 1:1 - Additional Swimmers £25     (Max 3 Swimmers)       4 hours

Groups will be required to swim at the same pace whilst socially distancing.

You will swim at the pace of the slowest swimmer.

Course Details

Our course takes you across the heart of Rutland Water, one of Europes largest man made Reservoirs

We have four distance options for all abilities.

SwimRutland Course map.jpg

Our course spans one of Europes largest reservoirs. Rutland Water is one of the most iconic landmarks in the midlands. As well as being beautiful it is an incredible undertaking swimming across its width.

Our course is 2km across with options to complete numerous passes up to 10km.

1. Email to discuss times and dates. Tell us your ideal dates and times and we will do our best to accommodate it. The lake is open 7 days a week. Availability depends on what's happening at Rutland water.

2. We will then book the venue and make all the arrangements for the swim

3. We will email you to confirm the booking and take payment for the session. (bookings are confirmed once payment is received)

4. A SwimRutland solo guide will be emailed to each swimmer to help you prepare for your swim.

You must Agree to the terms and conditions of entry to book your session.

Please note the temperature ranges before entering the event.

18.9c and under = wetsuit compulsory
19c and above = wetsuit optional in all distances
23c = Advisory Non-wetsuit for 2km
24c = Advisory Non-wetsuit for 4km & 8km
Mini swimmers will be offered guidance based on their ability and swim speed.

If the water temperature does not reach 19c, this will be a wetsuit compulsory event. Please consider this when entering. There will be no transfers or refunds made because of the wetsuit policy.

The upper limit is discretional. We advise that you don't wear a wetsuit above these temperatures but acknowledge not everyone is here to swim as fast as possible and might require the extra warmth.

The policy has been agreed with the lake owners using industry best practice and our collective knowledge of the venue. Temperatures will be adhered to; no exceptions will be made. Unfortunately, we cannot make additional allowances for experience or preference. We appreciate your continued understanding.

Swim Floats

Swim floats are compulsory for this event

They are designed to make you visible without impeding your natural swimming stroke.

We loan our swim floats for free to all competitors. No need to book, no need to make any arrangements.

They will be ready to collect on the morning of SwimRutland.

We believe that they offer our swimmers the best possible safety during our event.
